Flowers add a decorative eye-catching pop of color and texture to any room in the home. By swapping out blooms and changing various elements of the arrangement to fit the seasonal tone, you can keep the look refreshing and new. Which flowers are chosen, how they are arranged and in what sort of vessel they are contained is only as limited as your creative imagination.
When browsing through websites and catalogs, you will see that the options far exceed the classic roses in a traditional vase. When you order flowers online or fresh flowers by post, you are presented with dozens of choice blooms from the seasonal to the exotic, arranged in everything from baskets and galvanized buckets to tea pots and watering cans. By seeking some inspiration on such pages and applying some of your own creative talents, you can achieve some attractive and whimsical flower arrangements yourself.
Creative Containers
Craft stores have a variety of floral containers to choose from. Delve into the storage recesses of your home and you are equally likely to find some containers waiting to be filled. Think outside of the box, absolutely any structure that has an opening to a hollow inside will work. Try welcoming the first days of springtime with bright yellow daffodils arranged in a ceramic pitcher or a small, galvanized watering can. An arrangement of red and yellow tulips sprouting from a basket weave wine bottle holder makes a natural centerpiece for a spring dinner table. An old-fashioned milk jug looks much perkier when filled with bright colored dahlias. For the holiday season, designate some poinsettias or other red blossoms to become the passengers of a sleigh-shaped basket or statue. If you appreciate the appearance of seaside decorating, a large conch shell provides yet another container possibility. The cooking enthusiast can enliven the look of the kitchen by arranging flowers into various culinary items such as a honey pot, teapot, wine bottle or decorative canister. For an autumnal floral arrangement, try hollowing out two to three pumpkins of varying size, shape and color, then fill the empty gourds with clusters of fall mums in the bold seasonal shades of maroon, golden yellow, orange and purple. You still have the option to draw or paint some jack-o-lantern faces on each one.
Adorning Additions
If the horticulturist in you prefers live flowering plants that you nurture for years, take note that they need not live out their lives dwelling in the ubiquitous terra cotta clay pot. A popular craft allows you to ‘dress’ you flower pots. Knitting covers for flowerpots allows you to change the look of your décor without compromising your plants. These covers are usually knitted but they can also be crocheted, and they slip right over the pot. Now your artistic ideas are only limited by the palette of yarn colors that your craft store has on their shelves. Enjoy a red and green, red and white or burgundy and gold pattern for the holidays, and then switch to an ice blue and silver for winter, pretty pastels for the welcoming of spring, brilliant tropical lime and turquoise for summer months, followed by oranges and yellows as fall approaches. Getting back to that seaside decorator’s paradise, consider some knitted pot covers in nautical blue and white stripes.
When arranging flowers, think about other embellishments to accent the arrangement. Craft stores offer a host of accents and baubles to enhance floral decoration, from picks that display butterflies, birds and even fruit to long sprays of colorful grass spikes or glittered curlicues. For flowerpots, once you have outfitted the pot with a new cover for the season, set a couple of adornments atop of the soil near the most visible edge of the pot. Pinecones would look nice in the fall or winter, a couple of bright ball ornaments for the holidays and some pastel-colored eggs for springtime.
